3 Common Myths About Braces

Post by: / May 1, 2018

Over four million people in Canada and the United States are seeing or have seen an orthodontist at some point in their lives. Many of these people use braces to improve their smile. Despite the prevalence of these orthodontic devices, there are a few myths still floating around that paint braces in an incredibly poor light. Here are a few of the most common myths you might already believe, and the facts you need to know:

1) Braces Are Ugly.

Braces technology has made leaps and bounds since Grandma’s time. Today, our patients have several choices to help fit their teeth, lifestyle, and aesthetic. Going for traditional braces? Spice them up with coloured elastics! Want them to be discreet? Try clear or porcelain brackets! How about having them disappear completely? Then choose Invisalign! Whatever your orthodontic goals, it is now possible to customize your treatment, right down to appearance.

2) You Have to Give Up Your Favourite Foods.

Unless you’re a gumball junkie like Violet Beauregarde, you won’t need to completely give up your favourite foods while undergoing treatment. Instead, you’ll just need to be more aware of what you are eating. And remember, once you get those puppies off, you’ll be free to indulge in whatever you like! On the other hand, if you invest in Invisalign, you can eat anything you want throughout your treatment!

3) But Braces Are Painful!

General soreness after new braces or subsequent tightenings is normal. Intense pain is not. The discomfort that you feel should be mitigated with an over-the-counter pain reliever and maybe a bit of wax to apply on the edges of your wires. If you are experiencing any acute pain, contact your orthodontist right away so that they can help. In most cases, patients find the adjustment to new braces uncomfortable and sore at times, but seldom painful.

If any of the above myths have stopped you from getting braces, it’s time to think again! Here at Cory Liss Orthodontics, we offer a wide variety of options for braces that can benefit you. Contact us today to find out how we can turn your dream smile into a reality!
